In still camera photography, the next larger format of any importance after the 35 mm format is the medium-format. For the format sizes 4.5x6 cm2 and 6x6 cm2 , the firm of Schneider-Kreuznach consistently produced various other Variogon lenses, which were incorporated into the cameras of well-known manufacturers, e.g., Hasselblad, Zenza-Bronica and Rollei, and in some cases are still in use today.

The zoom lens shown in partial section in Fig. 1, the Variogon 45/70-140 mm, was developed especially for single-lens reflex cameras with a picture size of 4.5x6 cm2. In overall performance, it is every bit the equal of top-quality lenses with fixed focal lengths; because of the additional possibility of continuous focal length adjustment from 70 to 140 mm without refocusing, however, it offers the photographer distinct advantages in connection with serial photographs without changing the camera position. The built-in between-the-lens shutter, as with
every fixed-focal-
length lens,
is fully coupled with all camera functions. The additional macro-focusing even permits close-up pictures up to a distance of only 25 cm from the first lens with a full-size subject of
203 mm x 263 mm!
