Series "Day of the Museum Mile"

On the day of the museum mile, Professor F.C. Gundlach asked me to take photographs coram publico.

My concept

consisted of making the people attending the exhibitions and demonstrations part of the exhibition – as portrait subjects.

We hung fifteen empty picture frames and set up a Sinar 8 x 10" in the middle of an enormous room. We photographed on Polaroid 8 x 10" Cross ( colour negative plus B/W positive merged in the processor ). Whenever visitors to the alleged exhibition saw the empty frames and asked what was going on here, I asked them to stand in front of my camera. I gave no instructions. The portrait subjects showed them-
selves purely as they were willing or able to. One lamp, a Briese Modul 180, was used for lighting.

At the beginning we only framed the best pictures in order to have fifteen pictures for the fifteen frames. However, we quickly realised that our selection was purely subjective, so we then hung all the pictures.
